What could keep me from receiving approval for an NC license?

If you are found to have a character issue—including criminal offenses, professional licensure disciplinary action, and liens or unpaid judgments—the North Carolina Real Estate Commission will review your application. Character issues are considered on a case by case basis and a decision is usually rendered within 45 days. If you receive an adverse decision, you have the right to a hearing before the Commission.

If you have a criminal history, you can petition the Commission and ask for a predetermination as to whether your criminal history will disqualify you from obtaining your real estate license if you were to meet all other requirements. You can make this petition early in the process, even prior to taking the 75-hour North Carolina broker pre-licensing course. There is a $45 fee and you will need to submit a criminal history record report. For each offense, you will also need to provide the court judgment and a detailed explanation in your own words describing the circumstances surrounding the offense.
